  PROGRAMMABLE SHUNT SETTINGS
Medtronic Strata  and  Codman Shunts

Typically,  neurosurgeons are trained with, and have a strong preference for one brand of shunt.  Certainly, a question you'll want to ask your neurosurgeon on your first visit is what type of shunt will be used and why.

Most  neurosurgeons will program the original setting to a mid-range.  The valve setting of a programmable shunt can be adjusted by your neurosurgeon in his/her office using a special magnet.  No surgery is required for a valve adjustment.   Surgeons are particularly conservative with elderly patients.
