Government. He was associated with the Bank of S.C., his signature was
required on much of the Confederacy's Fiscal paper, such as bonds and
currency.

From 1862 to 1865 - Co. A., 1st S.C. Regt. Infantry, Bratton Brigade,
Field Division, Longstreets Corp, Army Northern Virginia - CSA
Carey Columbus McMillan was eighty nine years, three months and twenty
days old at the time of his death. He was the last of 92 men who formed
the Bamberg Guards during the War Between the States.
He enlisted at Cole's Island, South Carolina as a private, later
promoted to fifth Sergerant, then after he was wounded he was demoted
back to a private. Later he worked his way back to a third Sergerant.

709 and 714.)
Carey enlisted at Cole's Island, S.C. on 11 April 1862; he was wounded
at the 2nd battle of Manassa, 30 August 1862. The following description
of his wound is given by Col. James R. Hagood, in his Memoirs from the
Surgeon's report. "Mini ball entered near point of left shoulder,
passing downward and inward and becoming lossed. Wound healed in twenty
days. The ball apparently lodged near left Scapula"; Recovered;
Furloughed abt. 5 October 1862; detailed in the Quartermaster
Department, Hagood's Brigade, 15 December 1862, by order of the
Secretary of War; absent on that service at making muster roll of 31
December 1862, and 30 April and 31 August 1863; reported on muster roll
of 31 December 1863 as present an on extra duty in Commissary
Department, reported on muster roster of 30 January 1864, as extra duty
Commissary Sergeant of the Regiment, reduced to ranks between 30 June
and 31 August 1864. Present at the Appomattox Surrender.
Cary married his brother’s widow.

Mrs. McMillan burned to her death at her home near Cope, Orangeburg
County, S.C. Monday morning and died from the effects a few hours
later. Her invalid son, William "Frank" McMillan, with hands bare tried
to extinquish the flames which now enveloped her. "Franks" hands were
severely burned.
"Matt" lived for 4 hrs suffering great pain from her horrible
experience. She remained conscious until a few minutes before her death.
She was survived by her husband, her son William Franklin McMillan and
her daughter Miss Mary McMillan.
Survived by the following sisters & brothers, Mrs. H. J. Brabham of
Bamberg, S.C., Mrs. E. R. Cleckley of Cope, S.C., Mrs. C.C. Faust of
