St Johns Baptist Church & Cemetery

Submitted by Anne Gelwicks  AnnGelATcomcast.net.  Transcribed from photographs Anne took October 2006.

There are over one hundred names in this list. Some information was covered by flowers or other stones in the photo, and some info would need to be read in person. I have included questionable information marked with “?”. There are more stones that were not photographed, and quite a few small stones that could have been footstones, or perhaps small markers with all the lettering worn away. This is adjacent to an active church, but I have not contacted them about any records yet.

There is an historical marker in front of the church:

St. Johns Baptist Church

This church, established 1829-30, was first named Three Mile Creek Church and held early services in a brush arbor 4 mi. W. on the Salkehatchie River. In 1839 it was moved to this site donated by George Kinard, and was renamed St. Johns Baptist Church. A permanent sanctuary was soon built, some of which is till extant within the present sanctuary, renovated in 1865, 1938, and 1961.

Other names in cemetery which I didn’t transcribe: Barnes, Mears, Willis
