HEWAT
Alexander HEWAT (1739-1824) was the first historian of South Carolina
and Georgia. His "An Historical Account of the Rise and Progress of the
Colonies of South Carolina and Georgia", 2 vols, (London, 1779) was reprinted
in 1962 by the Reprint Co, Spartanburg, SC. Alexander arrived in Charleston
in 1763 as Minister of the Scots (First Presyberterian) Church. His brother
Andrew Hewat (my gggg grandfather) joined him about 1770. Andrew was a
wine merchant in Charleston and married a widow, Katherine Brisbane (widow
Elliott) in 1773, later becoming a planter with his brother-in-law Adam
Fowler Brisbane. Both Alexander and Andrew were Royalists, and were expelled
from SC in 1777, with their land in Colleton and Craven Cos confiscated.
We would be interested if anyone could search Charleston church, land and
Royalist Army records for this unusual name (sometimes spelled Hewatt).

HIATT - STRICKLAND
I'd like any information on South Carolina/North Carolina HIATTS (any spelling!), particularly that concerning those who were in the Colleton District of South Carolina in the early 1800s. My 4th great grandmother was Rebecca HIATT (b.1810 SC). She married William STRICKLAND (b.1797 SC) around 1828 and are found in the 1830 SC census in Colleton. They had HIATT next door neighbors who were likely related to Rebecca. I think one of them was an Arthur. I'd like to know who Rebecca's parents were and how she fits in with the other Hiatts in the area. Rebecca and husband William Strickland had several children all born in SC: Mahalia(b.1828), Unity (b. 1830), Samuel C. (b. 1830), Matthew (b. 1832), Jane (b. 1834), Mary Ann (b. 1841) and Dicey (b.1843). Rebecca and William moved to southeast Georgia around 1845 or so. Her name was spelled Hyatt in Georgia. |
