Colleton County SC Churches & Cemeteries

Spell Cemetery
aka Rice - Risher Cemetery
Spell Cemetery
Located on S. C. Highway 61, approximately three miles from the intersection of this highway with S. C. Highway 217.  This cemetery is transcribed in fulll on pages 47-50 of the book, "Cemeteries Of Upper Colleton County South Carolina," by Evelyn McDaniel Frazier Bryan and Gibson Howard Bryan.    In the past  this cemetery was known as the Rice Cemetery for the family who originally owned this land, and later was referred to as the Risher Cemetery (no marked graves remain for any members of the Rice family).

Families buried here include Spell, Risher, Williams, Wilson,  Liston, and Berry.  Please keep in mind that the old tombstones are difficult to read, and mistakes can be made in the transcriptions (recent transcriptions and those included in the book which was first published in 1869). I have included some information from the book, but do not assume that the book is correct and the recent transcriptions are not.  Recent transcriptions include updated information for burials since the book's last publication.  Pat Sabin, Colleton County SCGenWeb Coordinator.
