Death at Walterboro

Mrs. J.R. Stokes, wife of the late J.R. Stokes, of this place, died at her home Thursday afternoon about 3 o’clock.  Mrs. Stokes had been unwell for about a week but was thought to be improving.  No apprehension was felt as to her ultimate recovery.  She died rather suddenly of heart failure in the 58th year of her age. (sic)  Mrs. Stokes was an estimable lady and a faithful member of the Methodist Church.  Her husband the late J.R. Stokes was prominent in the business circle here for many years, having been senior member of the firm of Stokes & Raysor, lumbermen.

The funeral was held Friday afternoon at 5 o’clock at the Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. J. L. Daniel, after which the interment took place at the Live Oak Cemetery.  Mrs. Stokes is survived by her brother Mr. Jacob Rowel of St. George’s and Mrs. C.D.C. Adams, her adopted daughter, of this place.
