CYPRESS METHODIST CHURCH CEMETERY

Cypress Methodist Cemetery
Photographs on and linked from this page by Paulette Johnston

from
CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS OF DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC
Compiled by Lillian H. Harley, Pattie W. Heaton, Lillian D. Kizer
Location: Just off the Ridgeville intersection of US Hwy. 78.
Historic Old Cypress Campground is the second oldest of the three remaining South Carolina colonial church campgrounds and continues actively on the exact location as when Methodist Bishop Francis Asbury preached there in 1794. The nine acre rectangular shaped border of clapboard tents is centered by the tabernacle which is supported by many original handhewn timbers. On the southwest border of the campground lies Cypress United Methodist Church built on the site of Old Cypress Chapel which is believed to have preceded the campground. Behind the church lies Cypress Cemetery which, like the church and campground, continues on the original site. Many of the oldest Ridgeville area families are buried here. Three of the former Methodist pastors were buried in this serene cemetery they held so dear: Rev. A. R. Danner, died 1878; Rev. Samuel D. Vaughan, 1846-1917; and Rev. Benj. Greig Vaughan, 1879-1918. The older members and Mr. William Hill, a trustee, said there used to be a lot of old wooden markers which deteriorated before written records. The oldest remaining tombstone is that of Eleanor Lawrence, born June 14, 1795, died January 6, 1824. Mattie Lee Browning, 14 April 1978.
Copyists: Mary R. Heaton, Lillian D. Kizer, Lillian H. Harley, Irene J. Berry, Estell J. Crosby.

Date: May 1, 1977
