LIMESTONE BAPTIST CHURCH and CEMETERY

from
CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS OF DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC
Compiled by Lillian H. Harley, Pattie W. Heaton, Lillian D. Kizer
Location: On US Hwy. 178 west of Jct. S-18-28 and west of Four Holes Bridge.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF LIMESTONE BAPTIST CHURCH By Louise T. Bishop

In 1850 there was a group of people in this community that had a vision for a Church. They wanted to have a place to worship so much that they built a Brush Arbor by the side of the road. This was made in the shape of a grapevine arbor with brushes over the top for shelter. Benches were made of wooden boards for the women and children to sit on. Most of the men stood. We so not know when the first building was erected, but in 1907 the Church was rebuilt. The floor sills and beams were hand hewn, not sawed. Most of the lumber and labor was donated by members. Dr. Govan B. Harley gave two acres of land for the Church and Cemetery. Most of the time there were just one or two preaching services a month. This was during the 'Horse and Buggy Days' so our services were limited. In 1927 Sunday School rooms were added, and we had Sunday School every Sunday. In 1936 another wing was added to the Church and on April 3, 1949 Limestone held its first Sunday night service. We do not have complete records on all the pastors and important matters, but the best information we could secure is this: Most of the pastors received little money in the early history of the Church. They were paid with chickens, eggs, and various things the members had to give. Ministers names available were: Rev. Stutts 1850, First Pastor; Rev. Fewox 1887; Rev. J. J. Kinton 1892; Rev. Jim Dalton 1905; Rev. Frank Droze 1907; Rev. A. A. Bailey 1918; Rev. Jerry Craven 1922; Rev. B. F. Hastey 1928; Rev. Cribb 1932; Rev. Perry Walters 1935; Rev. Perry Walters 1951; Rev. Brice Litchfield 1951, 1953; Rev. Hollis Bond 1953, 1957; Rev. Douglas Newton 1957, 1960; Rev. James Alverson 1960, 1969; Rev. H. R. Saxon - Feb. 23, 1969; Rev. Charles Merchant; Rev. J. Hawkins; and Rev. James Prat, our present pastor. On April 12, 1962 Limestone voted to move the old church and build an auditorium, which was dedicated May 3, 1964. August 30, 1967 Limestone accepted a bid of contractor K. L. Harbeson for a new Educational Building. The third Sunday in February 1968 this edifice was dedicated. The chain link fence was erected around the entire cemetery in the 1960's. The Recreational Building was built in 1968. On 6th September 1967 Limestone Baptist Church was incorporated. Louise T. Bishop
