Location: On Hwy. S-18-317, known as County Line Road, between Charleston and Dorchester Counties, southeast of Delemars. The exact date that Sauldam was organized is not known, but information available points to the period between 1823-1830. An old Bible presented to the Baptist Church of St. Paul's Parish in 1841, organizing of Stono in 1841 and Ravenel in 1842, gives evidence that Sauldam was an established church. There were 100 white and 77 colored members in 1856, and 81 white and 100 colored in 1861. In the year 1868 letters of dismissal were given the colored members to join a church of the same faith. The year the church moved to the present area has not been established. The land, the present cemetery, was given by Mr. George H. Postell. The Associational minutes state that the wooden church was built in 1880. It remained at this site until the mid-thirties when it was moved across the road. A block Sunday School building was built in the late forties. Plans began in 1952 to build a new sanctuary on land given by Mrs. Docia Martin. On the third Sunday in February, 1955, the sanctuary was dedicated. A fire destroyed this building on a Saturday night, January 9, 1960. Preparation began immediately to replace the building, with cornerstone being laid July 9, 1961. During the early seventies, an educational wing, the GEORGE H. NEWTON building, was built and renovation of the block building, MARTIN HALL, was completed. Some men that served the church as pastors were: Reverends J. W. Hill, William Fox, James W. Elsey, J. R. Hyatt, William Dodd, G. W. Ackerman, J. A. Tuten, F. M. Droze, T. C. M. Gollands, J. M. Craven, R. D. Meyer, G. H. Newton, Mervein Brown, Leonard B. Belcher, and the present Arthur H. Smith, Jr. Some of the church clerks were: Messrs. Benjamin Sauls, J. S. Jones, J. R. P. Fox, D. B. Platt, T. A. Elsey, J. H. Davis, Mike Fox, Barney Fox, Ms. Maude Postell, Mr. H. B. Benton, Mrs. H. B. Benton, and Ms. Agatha P. Dukes. The church has been in several associations namely Colleton, Sauldam, and Charleston. Sauldam Association was organized in 1916 from a division of Colleton. These churches were listed: Shepherd, Limestone, Hopewell, Jedburg, Ridgeville, Piney Grove, Bethlehem, Ridge, and Doctor's Creek. The association apparently disbanned in 1928-29. Sarah W. Newton Evelyn M. Hughes reports, also, that the church was at another location which could be First Baptist Church of St. Paul's Parish (1840 - in minutes). Mr. McCants said there was a cemetery on the first location, and he knows part of it was destroyed. The old burying ground is bounded by Westvaco. The copyists met a group of very informative ladies who arrived for a meeting at Sauldam educational Hall. They were: Mesdames Mary Fox, Connie Mae Fox (formerly Blewer of St. George), Gertie Thompson, Annie Newton, and Eloise Caddin. They stated the Church is in Charleston County and the Cemetery is in Dorchester County.Copyists: Evelyn M. Hughes, Clara H. Myers, Pattie W. Heaton, Lillian D. Kizer, Lillian H. Harley.Date: January 30, 1979.
