Location: About three miles southwest of St. George on Highway S-18-26.Old St. George Baptist Church information from minutes of The Charleston Baptist Association: 1832, p. 15: "St. Georges. This Church has removed the seat of its worship about seven miles eastward of its former place of meeting and has dropped the name of Edisto Church, assuming that of St. Georges (the name of the parish), by which it desires in future to be recognized . . ." 1895, table: First time minutes give dates of church organization; 1828 is date given St. George. 1946, table: The name "Old" St. George first applied to the church.
It is assumed that the church and cemetery were located somewhere on or near the Wire Road about seven miles westward of the present location. Information from MAJOR DAVID GAVIN'S DIARY: Friday, April 1, 1859: "Staid at D. L. McAlhany's Wed. and last night and went yesterday and surveyed the land for the new Baptist Church of St. Georges. Daniel Patrick is to take most of the land belonging to the church and give in return for it other land adjoining thought to be more suitable for the church and of less to him than the old church land. He gives 3/4 of an acre more than he gets." The church and cemetery still occupy the last mentioned location. Frances T. Patrick January 25, 1978Copyists: Frances T. Patrick, Mary Kate B. Transcripts, shows two and three fourths acres of land represented as belonging to St. Georges Baptist Church contained within a survey of five hundred acres made for Jno Creel AD 1795. Surveyed for St. Georges Baptist Church at request of trustees and D. M. Patrick who is to receive the Original Church land given by Thos Reeves for the above and a consideration. Re-surveyed March the 31st 1859 by David Gavin, Surveyor. Recorded Jany 19, 1888. "I hereby certify the above to be a true copy of Plat as recorded in Book No. 6, page 163. (Colleton County records) H. E Padgett, Clerk of Court"
