THE WHITE MEETING HOUSE RUINS AND CEMETERY

from
CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS OF DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC
Compiled by Lillian H. Harley, Pattie W. Heaton, Lillian D. Kizer
Location: SC Hwy 165 South of Summerville to SC Hwy 642 then Southeast a short distance on left, originally a part of Old Dorchester, SC.

History: In 1696 when the Congregationist Church was founded by the Rev. Joseph Lord who was a Harvard graduate, Joshua Brooks, Nathaniel Billings, Simon Daken of Concord, William Norman of Carolina, William Adams of Sunbury, Increase Sumner and William Pratt of Dorchester, Mass., and George Fox of Reading received a grant on the Ashley River where the first house of worship in what is now Dorchester County was built. The town was laid off and named Dorchester from the place Dorchester, Massachussetts, likewise having been named for Dorchester, England from which some of them came. Later the wives and families of the above came, and Samuel Sumner, brother of Deacon Sumner, with his family. Having been built in 1696, it is believed that this is the first Church built by the settlers of Dorchester. The Church or Meeting House was called "White" either in honor of the Rev. John White, the Puritan Colony organizer in England, or was so named when the second building which was constructed in 1700 was covered with a white plaster. The White Meeting House was burned by the British in 1778, in 1794 the Church was reorganized and the building repaired. By 1815 the church ceased to function and gradually deteriorated. In 1886 an earthquake collapsed the building, leaving only one wall standing. Of the original 100 acres and buildings, all that remain today is the crumbling wall of the Old White Meeting House and the graveyard, which is now owned by the Presbyterian Church of Summerville. There is no record of the first burial at the site but it probably dates to the very first year or early years of Dorchester, and continues to this day to be an active Cemetery. This information is obtained from HISTORY OF MIDWAY CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH by Stacy, and local history. W. E. Limehouse, 15 February 1978.

Copyists: Lillian D. Kizer, Sheryl Kizer, Lillian H. Harley, Irene Berry, Estelle Crosby.

Date: January 16, 1978.
