ZION METHODIST CHURCH CEMETERY

Location: On State Highway 18-25, 4 miles south of Dorchester, SC.

It is believed that Zion Methodist Church, called Cypress Hill at that time, was organized around 1806. Much of the early history is not recorded but has been handed down by parents to children. Grandparents worshipped under a brush arbor while the first church of logs was being built. It is also believed that the cemetery was established about this same time due to the absence of family burial grounds in the community. The exact date of the old cemetery's orgin is not available in the present church historical records, however, the earliest death date recorded in the cemetery is that of Col. G. H. Muckenfuss who died on Jan. 30, 1859 at the age of 47. The log church served until 1858 when a more spacious church was built. It measured 30 ft. by 45 ft. with 14 ft. high walls. The church faced the new cemetery. Slaves worshipped in the back part of the church, which had one aisle and a pump organ. This building served the congregation from 1858 to 1913 when the present auditorium was built. Since that time five church schoolrooms have been added, the interior of the auditorium has been reconditioned with pews, pulpit furniture, plus a social hall added in 1961. We believe the improvements make the interior of Zion Church equal to any other country church in the state. On April 10, 1959 the trustees established the new cemetery on the north side of the church consisting of 84 burial plots with restrictions, rules, and regulations.
