Dorchester County, SCGenWeb
Diary of David Gavin
Records of Births, Marriages & Deaths

These excerpts are taken from a photocopy of the typed transcription of the diary.  I have not corrected spelling errors, which may be contained in the original diary or may have been typographical errors in the typed transcription.  If I have mis-read a name, please let me know.  Any comments or postscripts will be in [brackets].  Comments in (parentheses) are those of Maj. Gavin.

Please keep in mind that many of these events were recorded after the fact, and human error is possible.  There are some duplicate records (if they appear in duplicate, I will copy both entries).  There are many mentions of people and events throughout the diary...the records here were recorded separately by Maj. Gavin.   The opinions of Maj. Gavin are his alone and not those of the Dorchester County SCGenWeb.  I have omitted some derogatory comments which might be hurtful to descendants.

I will be adding records as time permits, beginning with the earliest.  I would welcome other volunteers to help with this project.

I also encourage a volunteer or volunteers to become involved by deciphering the data on slaves and free colored people mentioned  in the diary by building family group information and recording slave owner(s).  I'm sure this would be invaluable information for African American researchers.

I am very sorry that I am unable to do look-ups while coordinating the Dorchester County and Colleton County SCGenWeb sites (as well as many other genealogy and history projects).   If anyone has a copy and would be willing to do look-ups, please let me know.
