Bona Allen Baseball Players
Left to Right: Jim Hyder, John (Whack) Hyder, and (William) Dennis Hyder
Contributed by Gary Hyder:
"My grandfather(Jim Hyder) played for the Bona Allen Shoemakers in the 30's. I believe when they won the world series-semi pro.My one great uncle next to him is John (Whack) Hyder, the basketball coach at Ga. Tech for 22 years, and to his right is another of my great uncles, Dennis Hyder.
"I don't have any info about the play of my grandfather at Bona Allen, but I know he pitched for the team. He was an awesome baseball player from what I understand, but Branch Rickey tried to change his delivery and messed his arm up,so he didn't sign with a professional team.
"John(whack) made it to AAA Columbus(Yankees) before the war,and Ralph(Rat)hit for a higher average than Stan Musial in the Ga/Fla. league."
