Sodom Cemetery
Pleasant Hill Road / Norris Lake Road
Rockdale/Gwinnett County, Georgia

Partial Transcription (to be completed at later date)

This cemetery is located in North Rockdale County in the "Pleasant Hill Community.  It was given to the community of " Pleasant Hill" by Mr. J. W. Henry and the Henry Family to trustees "W. H. Camp, W. R. Owens, Jr.,(III), and J. W. Henry and the "Community of Pleasant Hill".  A copy of the deed is on file at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in the clerk's files. It has also been called the Henry Cemetery as the Henry family 1st used it.  This cemetery does not belong to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, although the church maintains it.  It was used by the church until 1952 when a church cemetery was created.

There are approximately 120 unknown or unmarked gravesites located in Sodom Cemetery.  Twelve of those are stone slabs, five are rock piles, one grave is marked by a footstone with the initials "JDG" another "D.S."  Some of the rock markers may actually be cornerstones marking off plots and not the actual graves.  There are approximately 700 people buried in Sodom Cemetery. There are many slaves and freed slaves buried in the cemetery although the graves are not marked except with fieldstones.  Some of the rock tombstones are probably poor whites too.

There are many Military Markers here.  One is an "American Revolutionary" Soldier, several Confederate States of
America, WWI, WWII, and Korea.  A couple are marked with "KKK", Ku Klux Klan.  There are also many with the Masonic Emblem on them.  William Henry, dated 1837 is the oldest date still legiable, although it is thought the cemetery dates from the late 1700's/early 1800's. Many children are buried here especially under the age of 10yrs telling us that the mortality rate was especially high among newborns.

There are single graves to ten (10) gravesite plots.  Most are bordered either by marble, concrete blocks or concrete walls. Most usually have no more than three buried in them regardless of how large they are.  One is even large enough for a marble bench and many pieces of yard art displayed.  It is very interesting.

Sadly today this cemetery is used mostly for "paupers burials".

Information from a book written by "David Moon, Jr., 2001, with many sources used for his information".
