May 1. Plant corn, haw flats, rain.

May 2, Break potato patch.

May 3, Plant corn Davenport hill. Jodie goes to Tom's in P.M.

May 4, Sunday. At home.

May 5, I am sick. We plant corn Davenp. hill.

May 6, We finish planting corn on upland and commence planting bottom.

May 7, Plant corn, Harris bottoms. ) 5:45 | h: t ‑ Ri ‑ b ‑ at ‑ N's ‑ p. come ‑ i ‑ Feb. ‑ 7‑'3 (** The above line looks like some form of short hand. I would guess the last means "at Nash's place, come in February 7 **)

May 8, Plant corn lower bottom. Truelove helps = .85c., rain at night. Volcano Pelee kills 30000 people.

May 9, Put out first potato slips, have first new Irish potatoes. I plow out corn middles, Truelove helps. Some rain.

May 10, Father and I go to Norcross in A.M. I give in tax = mule 60, 3 cows 50, household goods 50, wagon 20, farming tools 10, 2 hogs 10 = 200.00. I plow corn in P.M.

May 11, Sunday.  At home.  Reps Ross at dinner with us.  Bro. Tom, Mattie, Eula and Annie Ray call in P.M.  Bro. John and Mirtie Ray call in A.M. Father and Jodie go to preaching at Bethel in A.M.  Some rain.

May 12, I plow corn.  Cloudy.

May 13, We finish planting bottom corn in A.M.  I plow cotton in P.M.

May 14, I plow cotton.

May 15, I plow cotton, negros hoe in cotton.  Rainy.

May 16, We finish putting out slips in yam patch.  I plow cotton.  Rainy.

May 17, I plow cotton and corn, rain in A.M.  Aunt Adlissa Mathews come in P.M. to stay with us awhile.  Father goes to Bethlehem.

May 18, Sunday. Bethlehem Communion all go except Lillie, Everett and myself. Bro. Tom carries Mother.  Bro. Randolph and Billie Greer call in P.M. Rain in A.M.

May 19, Finish plowing cotton first time, plow corn West Hill in P.M.

May 20, We plow corn and hoe cotton.  Ed. Bruce plows for us, negros hoe.

May 21, Plow corn.  Finish chopping cotton.  On the 8th inst. at 8 o'clock A.M. the city of St Pierre on the island of Martineque D.W.I was destroyed by a terrible eruption from the Volcano Pelee, 30000 people were killed.

May 22, I plow corn and cane.  Cloudy.  Wm Ellis drowned.

May 23, I plow corn.  Mr. Reno gets 500 potatoe (sic) slips = .50.

May 24, Plow corn.  H. Dean gets 100 bundles fodder 1.75.  Ed Reeves gets 500 slips = .50.

May 25, Sunday.  At home.  Will Gresham is cut at Fellowship by Wright.

May 26, I plow corn.

May 27, Plow corn, and commenced plowing cotton second time.  Cold night.

May 28, I plow cotton.

May 29, I plow cotton. Mattie, Hugh and Annie Ray call in P.M.  Aunt Adlissa and Jodie went to Craten Green's Yesterday and will go to Bro. John's to‑day.

May 30, I plow cotton. Aunt Adlissa and Jodie return in A.M. from Bro. John's and Craten Green's.

May 31, I finish plowing cotton second, sprinkle of rain in P.M.  Father goes to Atlanta Heights in A.M. to hunt pigs, fails to find any, he takes dinner at Mr. Starnes.  I go to Bro. John's in P.M. for the mail.  I see Hugh and Orville Ray.

                   Many calamities have occurred this month, the volcanic eruptions in the West Indies killing over 30000 people, the mine disaster at Coal Creek Tenn. killing 225 men, the cyclone at Goliad, Tex. killing over 100 people, storm at Union S.C. killing 4 people and storm at Covington Ky. killing 7 people, the race riot in Atlanta 4 white policemen killed 3 or 4 whites wounded, and 3 negroes killed, one negro burned at the stake in Texas; Earthquakes in Mexico, California, Virginia and Florida.



June 1, Sunday. Jodie is 8 years old.

June 2, I plow bottom corn.  I go to Hoyle P.O. in A.M.  I settle with Mr. Nuckolls for May pasturage.  Hugh and Orville Ray with us to‑day.  Mule is sick.

June 3, I plow corn in A.M.  Mule sick not able to work in P.M.

June 4, I plow corn, mule better.  Very dry corn suffers

June 5, I plow corn.

June 6, I plow corn.  Aunt Adlissa stays all day at P.B. Starnes.  Our first beans yesterday.

June 7, I plow corn in A.M.  I go to Norcross in P.M.  A good rain at night the first since May 8th.

June 8, Sunday.  Father and Jodie go to Bethel.

June 9, I plow corn West hill "Fate" Nuckolls cuts my wheat.  Bro. Tom calls in A.M.

June 10, I plow corn.  Aunt Adlissa Mathews gets a tellephone (sic) message that her grandchild, Emmett Green was at the point of death.  Aunt Adlissa goes to Atlanta.

June 11, Emmett Green died at six o'clock yesterday P.M.  I plow corn West hill.

June 12, I finish W. hill and plow in bottoms in P.M.

June 13, I plow bottoms in A.M., plow cane in P.M.

June 14, I plow potatoes.  Father and Jodie go to Bethlehem meeting.

June 15, Sunday, heavy rains.  Father and Jodie go to Bethlehem.

June 16, I prepare potato ground in stubble, layby some corn and then start to plowing cotton third time.  Avery and Authur Young calls in P.M.

June 17, I plow cotton.  Alfred Gresham and Thompson Thompson take dinner with us to­day.  My mule sick.

June 18, Mrs. Piety Warbington and Mrs. Jane Turner come.  A good rain in P.M., wind. I plow cotton, and after rain I finish setting out sweet potato slips.

June 19, I plow cotton.  Mrs. Warbington returns home, Mrs. Turner remains with us.  Jodie goes to visit at Chas. Youngs in P.M.

June 20, I plow cotton.  Jodie returns from Chas. Young's in A.M.  Severe storm at night.

June 21, I sow some peas.  Jodie goes to her Uncle John Rays to stay a day or two.

June 22, Sunday.  Summer Solstice.  Longest day of the year.

                   At six o'clock A.M. a little daughter was given to Lillie and myself, the physician in attendance was Dr. O. T. Woodall.  Mrs. Jane Turner and Mrs. Harriet Young were here.

                   The baby's name is Lola Eunice Edna.

                   Mrs. Turner remains with us.  Bro. Tom's wife Mattie comes in P.M. to stay a couple of days.

June 23, I finish plowing over cotton third time and commence laying by corn.  I go at Noon to get medicine from Dr. Woodall for my infant Lola, kidneys not acting as they should.  Aunt Minervey Warbington calls.  Baby Lola is very fretful keeping Mattie and myself up most of the nights.  Everett is puny.

June 24, We have wheat thrashed, make 14 bushels.  My mother‑in‑law Mrs. Mathews comes in P.M. to stay with us a week.  Mrs. Lon Young calls.

June 25, Mattie leaves in A.M.  I plow corn.

June 26, I plow corn, laying by.  Mrs. Harriet Young calls.

June 27, Laying by corn.  First cotton bloom.

June 28, I plow corn in A.M., and go to Norcross and to Dr. Woodalls in P.M.  I pay Dr. Woodall $5.00 in full of account.  A very dry wind is blowing.

June 29, Sunday.  Bro. Tom and Mr. Dan Mewborn calls in A.M.  I go to Perry Gholston's hunting woman to cook for us next week failing to find one there I go to Pete Minors and get his mother,  Francis.

June 30. I plow corn.  Very hot and dry.  Carry muley cow to Nuckoll's pasture.  Aunt Francis the negro cook comes in P.M.



July 1, Mrs. Mathews my mother‑in‑lay goes home.  I plow in corn.  Negro cook with us.

July 2, I plow com, a shower of rain in P.M.

July 3, I plow corn.

July 4, The nations birthday.  Father goes to union meeting at Camp Creek.  I plow corn Davenport hill.

July 5, I go to Norcross in A.M., have wheat ground and mule shod, mule lame.  Very hot and extremely dry.  I hoe potatoes in P.M., father returns from Camp Creek meeting.

July 6, Sunday. Bro. Tom, Mattie and Annie Ray stay all day with us.  Negro cook leaves.  Pd. her 1.50.

July 7, I layby corn, crops burning up.

July 8, I am sick, Father plows.  We get light sprinkle.

July 9, I am sick, but get able to plow in P.M.

July 10, I plow bottom corn.  Very dry, crops parching up.  We eat first watermelon.

July 11, I lay by bottom corn.  We get a nice rain which is certainly appreciated.  Mrs. Harriet Young and Mrs. Oma Stevens (nee Young) call in A.M.

July 12, I carry load of straw to Terrell in A.M. @ .75c.  I finish laying by com and cane.  Showery.  I hoe potatoes in P.M.

July 13, Sunday.  At home. Bro. John calls in A.M.

July 14, I carry Terrell 100 bundles of fodder @ 2.00.  Jodie and I go to Norcross in A.M. to get her a hat.  I plow cotton.  Rain in P.M. after rain I pick some black berries.

July 15, I have 16 doz. R.P. oats thrashed = 5 1/4 bus., my part 4 1/2 bushels, also have 2 bushels rye thrashed.  I plow cotton in P.M.

July 16, I layby cotton.

July 17, I layby cotton.

                   July 18, I sell at Norcross 18 watermelons for $1.60. I plow cotton rest of the day. Mr. Rice of 64 Pounder St., Atlanta, stops with us on his way to Union meeting at Nancy's Creek. Father went there this A.M. Very hot.

July 19, I carry Jodie to Bro. Johns in A.M. to go to Celebration at Norcross. Mr. Rice leaves us in A.M. to go on to Nancy's Creek meeting. I plow cotton. Father returns from Union meeting in P.M. Jodie returns from celebration in P.M., Maudie and Mamie Ray comes home with her.

July 20, Sunday.  At home Father carries Maud and Mammie home and stays all day at Bro. John's.  Mr. Silas Gresham and wife comes to stay all night. Some rain to-day.

July 21, I plow cotton.  Mr. Gresham and wife go home.

July 22, I go to Norcross in A.M. and sell wattermelons (sic) $1.10. Lola Eunice Edna Ray is one month old.

John Young, wife and three children, Robt, McDowal, wife (nee Doppy Young) and three children, all of Dekalb Co. Alabama; also Larkin Young and wife; also Mattie, Eula and Annie Ray stay all day with us.  A reunion of kin and friends.  Aunt Adlissa Mathews comes in P.M. to stay a few days.

July 23, I plow cotton. I finish laying by cotton.

July 24, I finish laying by the crop of 1902.  I pick some blackberries and clean off ruta‑baga patch.

July 25, I go to Norcross and sell 50c of melons a total of $3.20.

I vote in primary (Dem.) election

I go to meeting of School trustees in P.M.

July 26, I carry Aunt Adlissa to Liberty Church near Lilburn, Ga. Jodie and I return home in P.M. leaving Aunt to attend the meetings.  Bro. Tom and Mattie call in P.M.  Those nominated at primary 25th inst. were

T.D. Cain had been clerk for 22 years was beaten by 800 votes.  Haslett had been sheriff for a number of years beaten by 1300 votes, carried only one district.

July 27, Sunday. Showery.  At home.

July 28, I plow turnip patch in A.M.  Showery.

July 29, I plow turnip patch in A.M., help wash in P.M.  Charlie Britt Road Com. brings me commission of road overseer on Peachtree road.

July 30, Plant rutabagas in A.M. and go to mill.  I plow Summer turnip patch in P.m.  Very Dry.

July 31, Around home.


 

Aug. 1, I go to Confederate reunion at Norcross in A.M.  At home in P.M. Sprinkle of rain crops are suffering very much for rain.  Cotton shedding.

Aug. 2, We work on Old Harmony Cemetery.

Aug. 3, Sunday, Lillie, Jodie, Everett, Lola and myself stay all day at E. Warbington.

Aug. 4, I go to Norcross in A.M. and have mule shod.  I go to trustees meeting in P.M.

Aug. 5, Around home. Father stays all day at J.F. Smiths.

Aug. 6, Around home.

Aug. 7, I go in buggy with Mr. J.C. Green to Lawrenceville and go before school board on business of redistricting the schools.  Jas. McDaniel brought Aunt Adlissa to our house yesterday and she left for home this A.M.

Aug. 8, I work on bad place in road in and around home in P.M.

Aug. 9, We go to Central Union S.S. Celebration at Harmony Grove, eat dinner with Miles Pounds' family.  Della Mathews comes home with us.

Aug. 10, Sunday, l went to Bethel.  Showery.

Aug. 11, I go to Chas. Britts'. I go on to Tucker to find him and then back to Nesbit place where I find him, l come from there to Jas. Dickens' and hire him to come and clean out well.  We clean out well in P.M. which cost 1.00, rope .40 = 1.40.  Some rain in P.M.

Aug. 12, I go to Norcross in A.M. and replant turnip seed.

Aug. 13, I help wash.  Della stayed last night at E. Warbington's.  I go to Norcross in P.M.

Aug. 14, I pick peas.  Very hot.

Aug. 15, Della, Lillie, Everett, Lola and myself go to John V. Bottoms and stay all day and buy 2 pigs two months old for $2.00 a piece = $4.00.  A heavy storm at night.

Aug. 16, I warn road hands to work road on next Wednesday.  Bethlehem Meeting.

Aug. 17, Sunday.  We all go to Bethlehem.  Mr. Bush Johnson and Mr. Jas. Herring take dinner with us.  Della goes home.

Aug. 18, I plow in rye and turnips.  Cloudy.

Aug. 19, I go to Pinckneyville and get 112 feet lumber for sewer box in road.  I sow turnips in P.M.  Wind storm in P.M.

Aug. 20, I work Peachtree road, my first experience as a road overseer, I have eleven hands.

Aug. 21, I pull fodder and go to Norcross.  Wind storm in P.M.  Aunt Adlissa comes in P.M.

Aug. 22, I pull fodder, a very good rain in A.M.  C.N. Britt calls in A.M. he orders me to work road again when the rains make it possible.

Aug. 23, My family and I go to Atlanta to visit kinfolks, we leave home 4:30 A.M. arrive at Howells at 10 o'clock A.M.

Aug. 24, In Atlanta.  I visit Bro. Randolph's.  We go to Free thinkers meeting ‑‑ I hope to never go to another such blasphemeous (sic) place.  I go to Grants Park in P.M. and back to Mr. J.F. Mathews.

Aug. 25, My family and I return home in P.M.

Aug. 26, I pull fodder.  Showery.  Miss Nannie Cook comes home with Jodie to stay all night.

Aug. 27, Put up hogs in pen.  I pull fodder.  Showery.

Aug. 28, Gale from East.  I go to Norcross in A.M. I buy one pr. of shoes 1.25.

Aug. 29, I sow seven top turnips in A.M. pull fodder in P.M.  Cloudy.

Aug. 30, Pull fodder.  We have takend up 908.

Aug. 31, Sunday.  I go to Jacks Reeves' and to Bro. John's in A.M.  Bro. Tom, Mattie and Annie call in P.M.  Aunt Adlissa goes home with them.  Father visits Aunt Piety Warbington's in P.M.
