Dearborn Street Station

Polk Street Depot, Chicago

"This station is located at Polk and Dearborn Streets, being one of the oldest in the city.  It is the terminal of the Wabash Santa Fe and Grand Trunk and other prominent railroads."   Built in 1885, architect Cyrus L. W. Eidlitz.  Designated a Chicago Landmark in 1982.   This was one of the city's most ineficient rail stations due to the fact that all the tracks were at grade level, crossing many busy city streets.  The station lay abandoned for many years following the cessation of train service, and demolition seemed likely.  The buildign was rescued and is the entryway to the residential development that grew up on the former rail yard (Dearborn Park).   Next scene on Dearborn St. Tour:  Chicago Historical Society
