Location: About 2 miles south of St. George on S-18-49, Quaker Road, is another country burying ground with beautiful huge towering oaks dating it, and a modern chain-link fence which is known as Dukes Cemetery and very well kept.
In 1970, during our search for cemeteries in the County, the late Mrs. Ennis Risher Sandifer reported and asked us to include Dukes Cemetery in our work, stating that some of her ancestors were entered into eternal rest there. The James P. Dukes monument is the oldest remaining in the Cemetery with death date of December 11, 1863. He enlisted in the Confederate States Army, Company C., 24th Regiment, SCV, St. George's Parish by the Hon. Morgan T. Appleby in 1861, and was killed at Chicamauga. (From ROLL OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS by J. Gavin Appleby, M.D.) Mrs. Kathleen Weeks Murray told us that James P. Dukes was the father of Oren Dukes. Therefore, we ascertain this burial ground was founded in 1863 or before as there are a few Cypress Markers with no names or dates. Mrs. Grace Connor informed us that her Uncle Oren Dukes formerly owned the land Dukes Cemetery was established on, and when he sold the land to Mr. I. U. Shieder, there was a clause exempting the GRAVEYARD, which is proven by an extract from a deed recorded in Book 7, p. 186, Dorchester County records. Frances T. Patrick
