CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS OF DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC
Compiled by Lillian H. Harley, Pattie W. Heaton, Lillian D. Kizer
Location: About 1.7 mi. North of US 178 on S-18-20, Dorchester County, SC.

History: A plot of land about one acre in size was donated by Mr. W.F. Jacques to be used as a cemetery in the Duncan Chapel Community of Dorchester County. Although the exact date when the property was given has not been precisely determined, it is believed to have been soon after construction of the Duncan Chapel (United) Methodist Church in 1905. Land on which the Church stands was given by Mrs. Martha Ann Weathers. She stipulated that a cemetery was not to be established in the church yard. The cemetery is located only a short distance from the Church which is on State road 11 and both are near Interstate Highway 95. The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Jacques that died Oct. 10, 1905 is interred here, but informed sources believe that the body was moved here later than 1905 after the cemetery was established. Mr. J. D. Pendarvis (born 12-1-1830 and died 2-14-1910) and his wife Lavinia (born 10-10-1842 and died 4-12-1909) were the first adults to be buried here. Presently the Duncan Chapel Cemetery is approaching its capacity and there is some movement to acquire more land to enlarge it. Marlene H. Dukes, Philip D. Dukes

Date: December 19, 1978.
