OLD INABINETTE CEMETERY

from
CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS OF DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC
Compiled by Lillian H. Harley, Pattie W. Heaton, Lillian D. Kizer
Location: This cemetery is located below St. George west of Byrds about three miles south of US 78 through private property of Mr. Lewis Byrd, Mr. William S. Horne, and Atty. Thomas Wolfe.

Permissions from: Mr. William S. Horne, Atty. Thomas Wolfe. On the 11th March 1979 Mr. & Mrs. William S. Horne were very kind to use their Sunday afternoon to lead us through the private roads, woods and farm lands, crossing dams that Mr. Horne built roads thereon in order to cross his lakes. Very picturesque, but very uninhabited as it is near Indian Field Swamp and these persons own large acreages of land in this area. As Old Inabinette Cemetery is completely surrounded by property of Atty. Thomas Wolfe of Orangeburg, he cheerfully granted us permission to enter, also, suggested that we ask Mr. H. H. Walters to burn the area off when he broke up the fields. Mr. Walters obliged us and we want him to know what a pleasure it was to go into a cemetery without briers, debris, and no fear of snakes.

Mrs. Georgie I. A. Lefvendahl in her publication, "SOME OF THE INABNIT, INABNET, INABINET, AND INABINETT Families of Colleton, Charleston and Lower Orangeburgh Districts and Counties," on page 22, states and I quote, "It is ironic that I have at last located the area of the Inabnet Cemetery, but cannot get to it. If I am correct, it is on the '378 acre tract formerly known as the Inabnett lands, or Inabinet Place,' as quoted in legal records." She also stated that she had received written permission to visit the cemetery, and since it was near Indian Fields Swamp and is widely known as "Rattlesnake Country" she had chosen October and Mr. Felix Moorer had made arrangements for a guide to take her there, but the guide passed away. We are very sorry to report that one tombstone only was found. This was of Mary Inabinette who died in 1858. There were several depressions in the ground that may have been graves, but no indications of markers. Therefore, we know this cemetery dates back to 1858 or before. Lillian H. Harley
