Location: One-half mile south of Grover, South Carolina, a short distance east of US Hwy. 15 is Utsey Cemetery with beautiful trees and a new chain-link fence, very well kept.

History: The oldest known grave in the Utsey Cemetery with a tombstone remaining is the one of Rev. Tristram Stackhouse who died September 23, 1831. Some of the older people from around Grover said they believe people were buried there before then, but they don't have tombstones and we have no proof. There are two Civil War veterans buried in the cemetery. The two children of Jacob Utsey have the same tombstone. One died on October 5, 1871 at the age of 2 years 3 months, and the other October 6, 1871 at the age of 7 months. No one knows for sure if they are buried in the same grave. The land bounding the cemetery belongs to Johnnie and Richmond Murray. The cemetery was widened and fenced again in 1977. A road from highway 15 to the cemetery was paved in 1978. The present trustees are: Grady Murray, Austin Westbury, Wendell Byrd, Luther Shelley, Willard Shieder, and Secretary Mrs. Ethel Sweatman. On 19 July 1972 the cemetery was surveyed by Earle A. Thompson, Reg. Engr. and recorded in Dorchester County records 3 August 1972 in Plat Book 19, at page 265. Most of the above information was supplied by Mrs. Geneva Fender, Mrs. Nealie Ingram, and Mr. Grady Murray. They gave the writer information on several people buried in the cemetery without tombstones which you will see listed on the last page of inscriptions. Pauline Fender McAlhany
