Cemeteries |
This family cemetery is located on the property of Mrs. Eula Knight of Jedburg, on mile off Highway 58 on land that was originally known as "Cypress Plantation." We found three graves: a readable slab to Mrs. Mary Waring and two stone markers with initials. Cypress Plantation was granted to Major Benjamin Waring on May 11, 1683 and over the years passed to his son, Benjamin Waring II, then to his son, Benjamin Waring III. Mary Waring, daughter of Benjamin Waring III, married Thomas Waring who was the nephew of Benjamin Waring III. In 1824 it was conveyed to Dr. Horation Smith Waring, son of Mary & Thomas Waring, who sold it in 1868. Around 1919 H. A. M. Smith, noted historian and author, wrote that he visited "The Cypress" and observed what appeared to be the remains of a fair-sized brick building. Not far from the remains of the old residence is the Waring Family Cemetery. The above information on Cypress Plantation and on the cemetery inscriptions was given to us by Mrs. Rosa Waring Thornton who has done extensive research on the Waring family. Evelyn M. Hughes
