The Bamberg-Herald, Bamberg

James Christian "Chris" McMillan

At the recent memorial exercises of the Rivers' Bridge Memorial Association,

the following in reference to Capt. James Christian McMillan, lately
deceased, was

adopted.

The committee, viz: W. E. Sease, J. A. Peters, Sr., and E. W. Peoples, whom

you appointed to report on the death of Comrade "Chris" McMillan, beg leave

to state that:

Comrade "Chris" McMillan died at his residence January 26, 1907. He

had more than lived his three score years and ten, being born October 26,

1831

A wise man has said, "Let no man be accounted happy until death."

If such is the case, we can now draw our conculusion with respect to "Chris"

McMillan, as, in our opinion, he has made life a grand success by bettering

mankind and glorifying God.

As a neighbor, he was unsurpassed In the words of one of this

committee (now deceased,) "If you need seed potatoes and went to "Chris"

McMillan, you got them; if you wanted to borrow anything he had, you got it.

It seemed to be a great pleasure to him to do a favor in any shape or form

he could." and thus he answered the question, "Who is my neighbor?"

His manner was reserved and he was careful in using expressions

calculated to hurt any one's feelings, hence his number of friends. The

writer remembers hearing him say many years ago, "Before I will use a harsh

expression I will walk away." He knew how to think twice before he spoke

once and he practiced it. He was a lifelong Mason, served four years in the

Confederate Army in the 3rd South Carolina cavalry; county commissioner four

years; jury commissioner for a number of years, and in 1890 represented

Barnwell county in the legislature--all of which offices he filled most

satisfactorily. The plaudit for him was: "Well done, thou good and

faithful servant."

He was by nature and education religious, having sprung from a

timehonored and influential family. He was a member of the Springtown

Baptist Church from boyhood; moved to St. John's Baptist Church in 1884 and

was elected to fill the place of deacon in that church where his membership

has been ever since. He was alive to every interest of the church,

particularly to the various causes his church supported, and always

contributed freely to their support. St. John's church will miss him in

many ways; the neighborhood will miss him; the beloved sons and daughters

will miss him. But he is not dead, he sleepeth, and still lives in the

hearts of the living comrades of the Rivers' Bridge Memorial Association.

Now, sirs, since the statements above are facts, and since "Chris"

McMillan was one of us here and particularly interested in this

organization, of which at one time he was the head, be it.

Resolved, 1st, that a page of our minutes be dedicated to the

perpetuation of his memory in the hearts, minds, and affections of the sons

and daughters of the Confederacy.

Resolved, 2nd, that a copy of these resolutions be sent to the

bereaved family, to let them know their trouble is our afflection, and that

we request the editors of Barnwell and Bamberg papers to publish them for

the benefit of the rising generation.

Resolved, 3rd, that each member of this Association wear a badge of

mourning, in his heart, at least if not on his arm, for the period of thirty

days for "Chris" McMillan, our beloved member.

45. Dr. Francis Marion "Barney" McMillan - son of Henry William & Sophrona
Delilah Faust McMillan

B. 1837 D. January 20, 1868 in Barnwell County, SC (present day Bamberg
County, S.C.)

He is buried in Shady Rest Cemetery, Colston Community, Bamberg County, S.C.

He was a doctor in the State of Missippi before the Civil War. Never
married.

He was a surgeon, attached to General Qualls Brigade, in the state of
Mississippi.

Hd Qts 1st Div Cavalry Corps.

Columbia, Tennessee

Feb. 26th 1863

My Dear Sue,

I promised to write home whenever I could find opportunity to do so, and in
asmuch as there is an occassional mail from this place. I will write to you
and let the note take the chance of reaching you. I find quite a difference
between infantry and Cavalry service though I must confess I am highly
pleased with this service. There is but little of the monotomy in a Cavalry
camp that is always among footmen, always on the move, we see new scenes
every day and our close proximity to the enemy keeps us ever alert. More or
less skirmishing takes place in the front every day, and if nothing prevents
we expect warm work among the enemy before many days have past away. We
occupy a position on the left of Gen Braggs Army and are now just Forty
miles from Nashville. Our forces are crossing Duck river now after which we
will not have many miles to travel before we come in contact with a nest of
Yankees. The march from Okoloma to this place was a rough one indeed. The
principal obstacle on the way being the Tennessee river. We crossed at
Florence, Ala. in little flat boats, which were only large enough to carry
about fifteen men and horses. The river at that point is nearly a half mile
in width, and generally it would take an hour to make a trip across. You see
then how tedious work it was to cross six thousand men and horses, with only
three or four flats at work

When I wrote you from Mobile, Ala., I felt quite uncertain as to my future
position in the army. I had just been relieved from an honorable position at
Grenada, by the breaking up of Genl. (Rust's?) Division, and although that
position was exceedingly unpleasant to me, I disliked to be place in an
inferior position.

But I was compelled to take an inferior position, for a time at least or
resign my Commission, and of the two alternatives I accepted the former. As
I could not get my former position in the Mississippi Battalion, that place
being occupied by another Surgeon upon my own recommendation. I concluded to
ask to be transferred to Cavalry service. My request was granted and I was
ordered to report to Col Starke for duty as brigade Surgeon for his brigade,
but on arriving at Okolona I found that he was not in command of a brigade
nor was he likely to be placed in command of one. I immediately reported to
Gen. Van Dorn for orders, and was directed by him to report to Gen Cosby who
was in command of the brigade which was intended at first for Col Starke,
Gen Cosby had no vacancy in his brigade, but invited me to remain with him
until I could find a place that would suit me.

During the march to Tuscambia I was introduced to Genl Martin who had been
ordered to take command of a Division of Cavalry under Genl Van Dorn and was
recommended by Gen Crosby for the position of Chief Surgeon for this
Division.

Several day afterwards, and after I had one or two long converstions with
Genl Martin, he was kind enough to offer me the position, which I of course
gladly accepted.

There is a wide differnce between the position I now occupy, and that I held
under Gen (Rust?). With him, seldom past a pleasant day. Whenever I spoke to
him, I expected a short reply, and consequently I scarcly ever approached
him in social conversation, but almost always in my dealings with him,
confined myself strictly to the discharge of such business matter as
mutually interested us both.

He always assumes a "dictatorial air" even among his Superiors and often
times I have expected to see him placed under arrest for discourtious
conduct towards officers of higher rank. Among other his (______) unbecoming
a general he was a gambler ; and many a visitor have called on him and gone
away minus a good portion of their money. But for fear you may think that I
really possess ill will for him I will leave off writing about him, and tell
you something of Genl Martin. Genl Martin is originally a Kentuckian though
for the greater part of his life he has lived in Mississippi and is regarded
as one of the best criminal lawyers of that state. Natchez is his home. At
the beginning of the war he raised a company in that city and soon after was
ordered to Va., and placed under the command of Genl J. E. B. Stewart. Not
long had he been in sevice before he was placed of a legion called the "Jeff
Davis Legion" and soon distinquished himself by his gallant conduct in the
many battles in which he fought, From the position of Lt. Col., he was
Brigadier Genl, an honor which is seldom conferred on any officer of a lower
rank than Colonel. After he received his promotion he was ordered to the
western department and placed in command of division of Cavalry; and is
eminently qualified to discharge the responsible duties of this important
office".

He is kind to all, but is with his men a strict disciplinarian. I have been
with him now about two weeks and must say that I have discovered no fault in
him. He is a strict member of the Presbyterian Church, and is among the few,
since the out break of the war, place that high regard upon religious
matters that become the christian in civil life as well as when surrounded
by all the horrors of war. I feel thankful that fortune has place me with
him for now. I spend many hours in social conversation with him and look
back upon the day on which I left my former position with unalloyed
pleasure.

I left many friends behind me and it is a pleasant thought that I left but
few enemies, but I find many friends here, and every day I am more deeply
impressed with the belief that honest men find friends almost everywhere.

I must now close, though my inclinations are to write much more and tell you
something of the country through which I have lately past, but I have no
more time, we expect to leave Columbia tomorrow, and no telling when I can
write again.

But you must never suffer yourselves to be uneasy about me, I will trust to
the gods of battles for protection.

I must bid you good bye for the present with much love to the family and to
Aunt Becky's family. I am your affectionate

Marion

I have seen late northern papers, I wish you had them and would send them if
there was any certainity of their reaching you.
