68. Jacob Edmund Free, Sr. - son of Jacob & Lacy Morris Free

B. October 11, 1820 D. July 03, 1884 in Barnwell County, S. C. (Present Day
Bamberg County, S.C.)

He was a Captain of the 11th South Carolina Reserves - Company E, Barnwell
District, S.C. Bet. June 1862 - January 1863. Captain Jacob Edmund Free was
in the 11th Reserves and was stationed at Pocotaligo for six months. He
participated in a couple of skirmishes around this area, but their main
purpose was to guard the railroads. Source of information: Sybile McMillan

the heart.

69. Allen C. Free - son of Captain Jacob Edmund & Sinia Guess Free, Sr.

B. September 06, 1845 D. October 30, 1914 in Bamberg County, S.C.

He served in SC 1st (Hagood) Infantry Regiment Co. K, before Reorganization,
Joined at Summerville, July 20, 1861

He transferred on May 1863 to Manigault's Battalion which was sometimes
referred to as the SC 18th Heavy Artillery Battalion. He fought in many
battles and became sick towards the end of the war. He was well enough
though to march at the surrender in Greenboro with his company on April 26,
1865. He was a private throughout his military career and fought in many
battles. In fact there are two books dedicated just to this battalion.
"South Carolina Siege Train" and "Siege Train: The Journal of a Confederate
Artilleryman in the Defense of Charleston". Source of information: Kathryn

first a Sergeant then made Captain. His tombstone indicates that he made the
rank of Captain. He is 1st cousin to Captain H. M. (Huey Medicus) Ray of
this same unit.

He was a Captain of the 11th South Carolina Reserves - Company E, Barnwell
District, S.C. Bet. June 1862 - January 1863. Captain Jacob Edmund Free was
in the 11th Reserves and was stationed at Pocotaligo for six months. He
participated in a couple of skirmishes around this area, but their main

He served in SC 1st (Hagood) Infantry Regiment Co. K, before Reorganization,
Joined at Summerville, July 20, 1861

He transferred on May 1863 to Manigault's Battalion which was sometimes
referred to as the SC 18th Heavy Artillery Battalion. He fought in many
battles and became sick towards the end of the war. He was well enough
though to march at the surrender in Greenboro with his company on April 26,
1865. He was a private throughout his military career and fought in many
battles. In fact there are two books dedicated just to this battalion.
"South Carolina Siege Train" and "Siege Train: The Journal of a Confederate

68. Jacob Edmund Free, Sr. - son of Jacob & Lacy Morris Free

B. October 11, 1820 D. July 03, 1884 in Barnwell County, S. C. (Present Day
Bamberg County, S.C.)

He was a Captain of the 11th South Carolina Reserves - Company E, Barnwell
District, S.C. Bet. June 1862 - January 1863. Captain Jacob Edmund Free was
in the 11th Reserves and was stationed at Pocotaligo for six months. He
participated in a couple of skirmishes around this area, but their main
purpose was to guard the railroads. Source of information: Sybile McMillan

69. Allen C. Free - son of Captain Jacob Edmund & Sinia Guess Free, Sr.

B. September 06, 1845 D. October 30, 1914 in Bamberg County, S.C.

He served in SC 1st (Hagood) Infantry Regiment Co. K, before Reorganization,
Joined at Summerville, July 20, 1861

He transferred on May 1863 to Manigault's Battalion which was sometimes
referred to as the SC 18th Heavy Artillery Battalion. He fought in many
battles and became sick towards the end of the war. He was well enough
though to march at the surrender in Greenboro with his company on April 26,
1865. He was a private throughout his military career and fought in many
battles. In fact there are two books dedicated just to this battalion.
"South Carolina Siege Train" and "Siege Train: The Journal of a Confederate
Artilleryman in the Defense of Charleston". Source of information: Kathryn

He served in the 17th Infantry Co. H., South Carolina Volunteers. He was
first a Sergeant then made Captain. His tombstone indicates that he made the
rank of Captain. He is 1st cousin to Captain H. M. (Huey Medicus) Ray of
this same unit.
