NOTE ABOUT LOCATIONS:   If you are not familiar with modern Gwinnett County, a particular mailing address may
not be in the city limits of that town, and in fact may be miles away from the center of town.  Here is a great reference site for historic maps of Gwinnett County as well as current maps, located at the Carl Vinson School of Government, University of Georgia.  For more information about towns and people, visit the Town and Surnames pages on this site.

If you have old photos to share, please read THIS.   If you can add to the history or the houses and buildings, and the families who lived there or operated the businesses, please let me know!  Be sure to check the Cemeteries page for additional photographs and information on Churches and Cemeteries.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION

Where historic homes are concerned, we in Gwinnett County seem to be on a mission of Search and Destroy.  The song, "Everything
Old Is New Again" takes on a whole new meaning in Gwinnett, with  every lovely old property destined to
become another drug store or new subdivision one day.

Lately, I can't seem to get to all the little houses to photograph them in time, before the windows are boarded up and, in the blink
of an eye, the demolition team arrives.    Here are some good links to information about historic preservation in the Atlanta
area (plus my favorite endangered home in Atlanta, destined for destruction in July 2004).

TIPS ON SCANNING AND SENDING PHOTOGRAPHS

If you have digitial images of Gwinnett County historic sites or people, please consider making a contribution to this project.  We'd
love to have group photographs (school, church, family reunions, companies, etc.), old (or new) photographs of historic homes and buildings,  and old portraits.  Please limit the photos of people to 1930 and older, and pick your best old pictures (not muliplies of the
 same family members).

For faster download upload on slower computers, I'll reduce the file sizes to 72 dpi and compress them so the file size
is no greater than 60K (unless it's a large group).  If you know how to scan at 72 dpi, or reduce in your photo editing software to
72 dpi, that would be very helpful.    If you are just learning to use your scanner, or if you are accustomed to scanning for print and not
for the Internet, you may need to practice a bit, and check resolution vs. file size to see what makes a happy medium.  You can
go to Windows Explorer and VIEW DETAILS to check the file sizes.

Save in a .JPG file, and you may need to compress the file about 15-25% to keep it in that reasonable download range.  Save the
file with a short file name with no spaces (for instance JSmith instead of James W. Smith).

Be sure to let me know ahead of time before you send an attachment, so my Internet Security won't reject it.  Thanks!

I've taken photographs over several years, and will be adding to this collection as time permits. You are more than welcome to capture any of my own  images for  personal use, but please don't republish them (on the Internet or elsewhere) without my knowledge and consent.  Thank you!  Pat Sabin.

You'll find more photographs of Gwinnett County (including one of mine, submitted by someone else!) at the USGenWeb Photo Project.
